The operating system is an interface between the user of the computer by the computer hardware. General
understanding of the operating system is managing all the resources
contained in the computer system and provides a set of services (system
calls) to the wearer making it easier and freshen the application and
use of resources computer system.Historically, the operating system has developed very rapidly. The development can be divided into five generations:1. First generation (1945-1955)The
first generation was the beginning of the development of electronic
computing system as a replacement for mechanical computing system, it
caused people to calculate the speed of humans is limited and very easy
to make a faux pas, mistakes and even errors. In this generation there is no operating system, the computer system was given instructions that must be done in person.2. Second Generation (1955-1965)The
second generation introduced a Batch Processing System, the Job is done
in a series, then this generation berurutan.Pada executed in a computer
system is not equipped operating system, but some of the functions of
existing operating systems, for example, the operating system is
functioning FMS (Fortran Monitoring System) and IBSYS. So this second computer generation is the first generation of the system operation.3. Third Generation (1965-1980)On the development of next-generation operating system was developed to serve multiple userswell,
where users communicate through interactive on-line terminal to the
computer, the operating system into a multi-user (in use many users at
once) and multi-programming (serving many programs at once).4. Fourth Generation (Post 1980)Today, the operating system used for computer networks where users awareexistence of computers that are connected to each other. At this time theusers
have also been reassured by the Graphical User Interface is
interface-based computer graphics are very comfortable, at this time
also began the era of distributed computing where computations are no
longer centered on one point, but broken in many computers in order to
achieve better performance.5. Fifth generation (post-2001 to Present)Defining the fifth generation computer becomes quite difficult because this stage is still on the way. Imaginative examples of fifth generation computer is the fictional HAL9000 computer from the novel by Arthur C. Clarke titled 2001: Space Odyssey. HAL displays all the desired functionality of a fifth generation computers. With
artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence), HAL could reason
well enough to hold conversations with humans, using visual feedback,
and learn from his own experiences. Although it may be the realization of HAL9000 is still far from reality, many of the functions that had been established. Some computers can receive verbal instructions and imitate human reasoning. The ability to translate a foreign language now becomes possible. This facility is deceptively simple. However,
such facilities become much more complicated than expected when
programmers realized that human understanding relies on context and
meaning rather than just translate words directly.
